SketchBook Assignment #3

Irving Penn

1.

These pictures are by Irving Penn are portraits. They are focused on the persons unnormal. The first mans focus is his hair, and his nose. The older womans focus is her nose and the last pictures focus is the freckles. All the pictures are really gritty, and detailed. I think this is to show the the imperfection of the human, and I think Penn is commenting on how we should cherish and celebrate what makes us different. He is taking these pictures by focusing on the unnatural, he has everything in black and white.  He generally takes close ups to show everything.

Sketchbook Assignment #2

Josh Sommer

1.

All of these pictures are heavily photo-shopped. They are regular photos which have been turned into miniworlds. This pictures have been rotated around a central point. Sommers uses color to define the objects in the pictures, the rest of his pictures are usually plain, and have a continual pattern. By doing this Sommers has managed to create a world which is a paradise. He has managed to create a picture which encompasses one or two objects, making it a simple world. I think he is commenting on our society and our inability to embrace the simple. I think he is also commenting on how our society is obsessed with material goods, and cannot focus on what is good. We have to start living our lives in a world where we can focus on the good, and not try to keep getting more, we must be satisfied with what we have now.
